MACC Fund Trek 100 Ride For Hope - Complaint Letter to Channel 12 - WISN

My husband wrote up this letter to send to our local news station, WISN on Channel 12. I'm posting it here in hopes others who were frustrated see it and send in a letter as well.

To whom it may concern,

My wife and I have ridden in the MACC Fund Trek 100 Ride for hope for the past 3 years. It is a wonderful event for a cause that is one of the best out there. We ride in honor of Kaycey Watry. She is the daughter of a college friend who was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma Cancer in 2004. Her cancer is in remission right now, but a group of us including her father still ride the 100K to raise money for the research that keeps these children alive. The morning events that the MACC Fund puts on are wonderful, and listening to the stories of the children that are fighting this disease, and the parents of those that are not as fortunate, really puts the whole day in perspective. We rarely leave the starting line with dry eyes, because the stories that are shared touch us so deeply. All in all, it really puts the day and our lives into perspective.

Now, this is where I need to complain about your station. From what I could tell, your station was the only one in the Milwaukee market that had aerial coverage of the start of the ride. While it was nice to see on the news for those not aware of the ride or what was happening that day, for the 3,000 of us riders your helicopter ruined the opening ceremony. The riders in the middle to back of the pack could not hear what was being said; other years we had no problem what so ever. We were even next to the electric speakers that that the MACC Fund had out there to enable the entire group to hear properly. Your helicopter drowned out any of the words that were spoken. You took away a meaningful part of our experience.

We only assumed it was your helicopter, because my wife and I watched all of the local news channels to watch for ariel footage. Yours was the only one. If we have mistakenly blamed you for this then we apologize, but if it was your helicopter, please refrain from using it next year as it took away from the experience for those of us in the ride. The MACC Fund themselves did a wonderful job making sure the event did not focus solely around Lance Armstrong. He was there to benefit the ride, not to detract from it. Your coverage certainly detracted. We had hoped your chopper was up there to capture the speeches so that we could see those on the news, and those were not shown at all. Instead there was only 5 seconds of video that showed Lance Armstrong and his group starting off the ride.

We are highly disappointed in your television station.

Thank you, Mike Buettner Rider 2696 Trek 100 rider.

Wow, I'm sure it was hard to hear and concentrate on what was going on. Let us know the outcome.
