It's A Sad Day

Today was such a sad and horrible day. We met my Mom at the vet to find out what was going on with Murphy. He had an enlarged heart and about 10 pounds of fluid in his abdomen. Treatment wouldn't have helped, it wouldn't have bought any time with him and they wouldn't have been able to guarantee that he would have been comfortable. We had to have him put to sleep. It was awful. It was soooo sad.

Goodbye Murphy my friend, I know you were met at the rainbow bridge by Sherman, Ziggy, Stanley and Scruffy. Sleep well, no more pain.

Murphy

Fragile Circle

We who choose to surround ourselves with lives even more temporary than our own, live within a fragile circle, easily and often breached. Unable to accept its awful gaps, we still would live no other way. We cherish memory as the only certain immortality, never fully understanding the necessary plan.

The Last Battle
If it should be that I grow frail and weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then will you do what must be done,
For this -- the last battle -- can't be won.
You will be sad I understand,
But don't let grief then stay your hand,
For on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship must stand the test.
We have had so many happy years,
You wouldn't want me to suffer so.
When the time comes, please, let me go.
Take me to where to my needs they'll tend,
Only, stay with me till the end
And hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time you will agree
It is a kindness you do to me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I have been saved.
Don't grieve that it must be you
Who has to decide this thing to do;
We've been so close -- we two -- these years,
Don't let your heart hold any tears.

Please accept my very belated condolences on beautiful Murphy. Our family has had to say good-bye to many beloved four-legged family members through the years. It doesn't get easier, yet we open our hearts again to share the unconditional love that these dear creatures teach us. My heart goes out to you, your mom, and Murphy's other companions.
