Movie Night

Mike is headed up to Green Bay with a buddy of his so I went to Jen’s for movie night.  We watched PS I Love You and Casino Royale.  While we watched we both worked on binding quilts.

I finished sewing down the hanging sleeve on my Fresh Emma wall hanging. I can't wait to get it hung up in my kitchen.

Then I moved to working on Rosie's binding. I got about half way done I think.

Jen and I got into the discussion of how far apart binding should be sewn. I don't know the right answer. I know that my stitches are much closer than Moneik's and that Jen falls somewhere in the middle of mine and Moneik's. Here's a picture of mine. This example is much further apart than I normally do because I am starting to think that what I do is quite overkill.

So, how far apart are your stitches? What is the proper width?

I don't think there is any "proper" width. Just do what feels comfortable to you. When I have scribed for judges at our quilt show, they are more concerned with straight corners and full, even bindings and not with the distance between the hand stitches.

I love this wall hanging, what a nice
reminder of all the friendships quilting brings into our lives!

No rules to how long the stitches. I think it is like hand writing. Some write small, some write larger. Mine ends up about probably 1/8" I would say.

I am of the mind set that even is more important than how far apart they are. I remember my home ec teacher tell me that since she could fit her WHOLE HAND in my hem stitches, I would have to do it over! Oh if she could only see my stitches now! she would be SO proud! I have 3 customer quilts waiting for me! Maybe I will offer binding too since I LOVE LOVE LOVE binding! I love your Chinese coins...and the lady that designed that Rosie fabric sold me my frame! Pam Tuttle....your quilting is looking great!

Mine are a little longer, maybe 1/3 inch (don't report me to the quilting police!).

I love what you did for quilting on the wall hanging and your binding looks great. I usually do about 1/8" long, but no more than a 1/4". I was taught if you could stick the pencil eraser in between stitches they were too far apart, so I do less than that.
